The Whole Mom
Perinatal Mental Health
From One To More
What to focus on when considering to expand your family
I can acknowledge, and appreciate how challenging motherhood can be. There are so many elements to consider when deciding to become a mother, and when exploring the possibility of adding to your family whether it's the first or third time. Some of the chaos and confusion that comes with motherhood begins in the early stages when we feel less prepared or ready for all that is to come. Adding a child/children to your family is a beautiful blessing, and could lead to stress and anxiety if you haven't readily prepared yourself, mentally.

If there is one theme I was able to take away from both pregnancies it was that I wasn't as prepeared as I could have been, and that increased my risk factors as it relates to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. When there are questions or concerns that we don't immediately address, it can lead to unresolved issues, making it challenging for us to effectively transition into motherhood. After both of my pregnancies and postpartum experiences, I was able to identify where the knowledge gaps were as it relates to mental preparation, and have focused my work around filling those gaps for other moms. This course is one of those areas, attempting to offer moms validation and insight into the most common areas we should be exploring and talking about before brining the subsequent babies into our homes.
As a first time mom, there were several things I had not taken into consideration such as sleep training, nursing challenges and the effects of sleep deprivation. Sure, I was aware of the challenges they posed, but I was not nearly as mentally prepared for their impact as I could have been.

When I was pregnant with my son, much of my focus was on the financial impact, sleep deprivation on everyone in the house, creating a welcoming environment, and teaching my daughter how to acclimate to her new sibling. There were new fears that had been unlocked and I wanted to make sure I was covering all of my bases in the most effective way possible.

This time around, the mental health aspect of postpartum wasn't only going to impact me and my husband. It would secondarily impact my toddler so I needed to prepare in a much different way this time, and identifying the most crucial components was where I needed to begin.

While we can never fully prepare for what lies ahead in motherhood, we can be educated and ready to adapt if/when challenging situations arise. Deciding to bring a child into this world is not a decision most of us make without thought, and it can be reassuring to know that you are not panicking or fearful for no reason. I have found that the more aware I am of my own emotions, fears, and adaptability, the better prepared I am to handle whatever is going to come my way.

Having a course like this is valuable for not only you, but your partner too. It could prompt discussion points that you might have otherwise glossed over for fear of rocking the boat or simply just didn't think about.
