On first
glance this book seems pragmatic and sensible. Closer inspection
reveals the biases: An expectant mother is labeled and taken
possession of early in the process as “our birthmother”.
While to some this label would simply sound affectionate, it
is actually a demeaning way to refer to an expectant mother.

I can’t
remember how old I was when I first read this series, which
might give you some idea of exactly how long it’s been.
I know I thought it a thoroughly acceptable fantasy story. What
can I say—I was young. But being a big fan of le Guin’s
writing, and reading of the Sci Fi Channel’s travesty
of a film of these novels, I decided to revisit the books as
